I believe this is made of a heavy plastic resin, but I am not positive. Either way, it's not metal or ceramic so if you use it as a candle holder for a tall pillar, do not leave burning unattended and extinguish before the candle gets too far down in the holder.
I have transformed this old piece with some cleaning and marigold yellow paint. I can see this piece having many uses. A pen and pencil holder, a utensil holder in the kitchen, a paint brush holder in an art studio, etc. etc.
